First Solids!

Max had his first meal of solids a few days shy of turning 6 months old!  He enjoyed avocado puree for this meal and loved it!  :)  Since then he has also tried peach puree which he also really liked.  I have already made and frozen farm-fresh carrots, beets and broccoli puree in individual portions so there are lots more flavors to try.

Many people wondered why we waited so long to give Max solids.  The new research suggests delaying solids until 6 months offers a host of benefits especially for a breastfed baby.  Also with Max's food allergies it helps to reduce the risk of developing any new allergies.  Here is a link to a website explaining the research related to delaying solids. http://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/solids/delay-solids.html

Others have wondered why we decided to start with fruits and vegetables rather than baby cereal/pablum.  Max is allergic to milk and most commercially-made baby cereals contain milk.  I could make him pure grain cereal however rice and oats are often trigger foods for the type of food allergy he has (FPIES - another blog someday to explain).  Also baby cereals do not contain much nutrition - just carbohydrates and iron (fortified).  Max will start getting pureed meats soon enough which will provide him with the iron he needs.

Here are some photos of the event!
Love,
